ASSISTANT COACHES

The trickiest role to navigate in soccer is that of the assistant coach. Tasked with a lot of responsibility but never the final word, being a good assistant coach can be more art than it is science. If you never question or challenge the head coach, then the performance of your team may suffer, but challenge too much and you could find yourself out of a job. Remember the importance of moving between states flexibly? A great assistant coach knows when to challenge, but also knows when to balance that with agreement. “I’m very straight up with my head coach here. If I think a player should be playing, for example, I will tell him that multiple times—always behind closed doors—so he knows exactly what my perspective is. I think it is dangerous to keep your opinions to yourself because it can negatively impact the team. But once a decision is made, I support it 100%. On match day, I side with the head coach without question.”

Jose Mourinho expressed a similar sentiment in an interview with Get Football News. “I do not need yes men. I want people who have their own opinions and people who contest my decisions, questioning them. But, on game day, we need to think as one.”
